Rugby Autumn Nation Series at Murrayfield
A month’s worth of matchday crowd protection for the rugby internationals
The Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium hosted all of Scotland’s World Rugby Union (WRU) home matches for this Autumn Nations Series season, kicking off on Saturday 2nd November for their opener against Fiji (A resounding 57-17 victory!). We were delighted to have been awarded the contract to support the Scottish rugby team and Murrayfield Stadium and deliver a month’s worth of temporary HVM solutions to protect key routes, junctions and access points for the huge number of Scotland supporters that have been descending on the stadium over the last few weeks.
Given that Murrayfield holds over 67,000 people at capacity, we conducted a thorough Counter-Terrorism risk assessment, followed by a Threat, Vulnerability and Risk Assessment, together with a Vehicle Dynamics Assessment before presenting our findings to the client.
We then followed up our recommendations by deploying four different types of HVM solutions – ARX Stopper, Highway Care RB50, ATG Surface Guard, and Husson H-Stop – at key locations in the major approaches to the stadium, to ensure that the huge crowds were kept safe and secure from any hostile vehicle incursions, and able to enjoy a decent rugby match, while ensuring the safe and easy flow of human traffic.
As with all our deployments, we ensured that there was sufficient access for authorised and emergency vehicles whilst the matches took place, and that we could easily, safely and quickly remove the kit, once the visiting rugby crowds had dispersed from the vicinity, after the match.
